Mexico lies south of the United States and north of Central America. The Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean touch its east coast, the Pacific its west. Over half of the country is tropical and practically all of it except the Yucatan Peninsula is mountainous. High mountains in the interior moderate the subtropical to tropical climate's warmth.
Agriculture, mining, manufacturing and tourism lead Mexico's economy. Aztecs in the Valley of Mexico and the Maya in the southeast were heirs to centuries of civilization. Both were overthrown by 16th century AD Spanish invaders. Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821 but lost considerable territory to Texas and the US in 19th century wars.
Mexico's warm climate is especially attractive to US tourists in the winter. Resorts, both lavish and modest, cater to visitors in the mountains and on the beaches. Spectacular mountain scenery and massive precolumbian ruins vie for the sightseer's attention. Bright lights and historic sites bring tourists to Mexico City. |
